How do you feel about painted furniture?" Halfpoint Images/Getty ImagesDemand is up for vintage wood furniture — without paintPart of the backlash certainly stems from the current state of the furniture industry, in which it's increasingly difficult to get your hands on brand-new, high-quality furniture. As a result, the secondhand furniture market is booming, with vintage furniture sellers proliferating on places like Instagram and Facebook Marketplace. The flippers said most of the hate comments tend to come from flips of midcentury modern furniture, in particular, a beloved and lasting design aesthetic from around roughly the 1930s to 1970s. Despite all the vocal online haters of painted furniture, there's a reason furniture flippers do it: the pieces sell.

The volunteer black walnut sapling in our front yard arrived courtesy of a local squirrel. I had to mark it with a little flag to make sure my husband didn’t mow over it by accident. The baby Eastern red cedars and the baby black cherries and the baby red mulberries were all planted by birds. (The baby willow oak and the three baby shingle oaks that appeared two years ago have already fed the rabbits.) This black walnut won’t reach full maturity for another 150 years or so, and that’s if no one cuts it down — a bet I would not take.

Street safety advocates say fire officials' focus on speed is making roads more dangerous. Many of the city's residents want to take action to make their streets safer. In March, LA voted overwhelmingly for a street safety policy that will finally enforce a nearly decade-old mobility plan to make the city's streets safer for non-drivers. Fire departments across the country have for decades opposed safer street design. He said fire departments can be convinced to support safer street design if they're heavily engaged by planners.

Editor’s Note: Ed Manning is a media executive and prostate cancer survivor. In the blink of a news cycle, prostate cancer was again casually swept aside as among the best cancer to have. Eileen TravellToday, we think of Renaissance portraiture as paintings on canvas or church walls, viewed openly. But an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, “Hidden Faces: Covered Portraits of the Renaissance,” reveals how many works of art from the period were deliberately covered by painted panels or shutters, or contained additional compositions on their reverse side. “These multisided and covered portraits have never been the subject of an exhibition before,” said the show’s curator, Alison Manges Nogueira, in a video call with CNN. On the reverse of this portrait, the artist Hans Memling painted one of the first independent still lifes, according to the exhibition. Monday’s Supreme Court showdown in NetChoice v. Paxton and Moody v. NetChoice will determine whether states can forbid social media companies from blocking or removing user content that goes against platform rules. The Florida and Texas laws are broadly written, but officials from both states say the laws will keep social media sites from unfairly silencing conservatives. Social media platforms have insisted for years that they don’t discriminate against right-wing speech. It also allows individual social media users to sue platforms if they believe they have been unfairly censored or “deplatformed.”Florida Gov. CNN —A new study finds that the asthma medication Xolair may substantially reduce severe allergic reactions in people who have multiple food allergies and are accidentally exposed to those foods. There is no cure for food allergies, and the only other FDA-approved treatment is Palforzia, an oral immunotherapy for peanut allergies in children between 4 and 17 years old. “But the reality is that most of our patients don’t just have peanut allergy,” Wood added. For people who have multiple severe food allergies and even moderate to severe allergic asthma, Casale says, Xolair might be the best treatment option. Xolair does not eliminate food allergies, and unlike with some environmental allergies such as pollen, many people never outgrow them, Casale added.

Think of those intricate rooms behind glass at the Art Institute of Chicago, a chandelier dangling from crown molding at 1:12 scale. This rush is something that Britain’s King Charles III, admitted to a London hospital on Friday, might have encountered prior to his decision to undergo prostate surgery. A mildly enlarged prostate can cause noticeable symptoms such as a weaker stream when urinating or increased frequency, especially at night. There are effective medical and surgical options to improve your condition if an enlarged prostate is affecting your daily life. In managing an enlarged prostate, several medical options are available, each tailored to the severity of symptoms and the patient’s overall health. Inflation in the United States has unquestionably cooled after hitting 40-year highs last year. Other key inflation gauges, the more comprehensive Personal Consumption Expenditures price index and the wholesale-focused Producer Price Index, have moderated as well. A spike in gas prices and other components such as persistently high shelter costs have kept inflation elevated. But as a Cornell dermatologist with more than a decade of experience, there's one type of product I never waste money on: abrasive exfoliant scrubs. It gets rid of dead skin cells, helping the skin to appear more radiant and feel smoother. Chemical exfoliants buff away dead skin cells, while physical exfoliants weaken the bonds between them. My best advice for sensitive skinPeople with sensitive skin may experience redness, stinging and burning, and may be more likely to react to certain ingredients. These formulas tend to include alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, or beta-hydroxy acids like salicylic acid.

PARIS (AP) — The “Mona Lisa” has given up another secret. The oil-paint recipe that Leonardo used as his base layer to prepare the panel of poplar wood appears to have been different for the “Mona Lisa," with its own distinctive chemical signature, the team of scientists and art historians in France and Britain discovered. What the Fed’s September Rate Decision Means for You
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( Steve Garmhausen | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +5 min
By Steve GarmhausenThe Federal Reserve elected on Wednesday to keep interest rates steady, and that’s good news for savers: It means they’ll continue to enjoy the best rates in more than two decades. There’s more good news: The market, which just a few weeks ago expected rate cuts to start early in 2024, now doesn’t expect cuts until midyear. “There are several options to get at least 5% on your liquid cash, and that should stay around until the Fed cuts rates,” says DepositAccounts.com founder Ken Tumin. Meanwhile, inflation remains well above the Fed’s preferred rate of 2%, providing another reason for it to keep rates high. The fed-funds rate is the interest rate at which banks lend reserve balances to each other overnight.

Envisioned two decades ago to add vibrancy and draw people to a place of devastation and mourning, the Perelman Performing Arts Center is finally arriving at a very different ground zero. Still, organizers believe the arts space, also called “PAC NYC,” has an important role to play in one of the most sensitive, historic spaces in the United States. “The performing arts center is kind of an amenity for a luxury neighborhood that they built,” said Todd Fine, who runs a advocacy business for historical preservation in lower Manhattan. Early on, the arts center was to house three established groups — two theaters and a visual arts museum — plus a new museum celebrating freedom. Then he came to see it as a step forward for the trade center and on a personal level, an embrace of living life fully.
